The graves of two brothers, buried side by side in an upstate New York cemetery. The older brother died in Vietnam and his teenage brother committed suicide upon hearing the news.
Their story inspired two of my characters in GRACE AT WAR.
A Novel, a Novelist, and a Search for Publication
GRACE AT WAR, an 70,000-word literary/mainstream novel, takes place during the explosive summer of 1970, when sixteen-year-old Grace Hart, traumatized by her boyfriend’s suicide, emulates the locked-down emotions of her combat-veteran brother, Worth. Their quest to make peace with their shattering memories and losses takes them from upstate New York to Long Island and eventually into the north woods where Grace must face their differences in order to save Worth and herself.
